Cast List (7w, 4m, 5girls, 2boys)

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN for SOUND OF MUSIC

(Strong singers and Dancers. Some could be double cast)

  • MARIA RAINER: A Postulant at Nonnberg Abbey. Orphaned as a child, Maria is a spirited postulant at Nonnberg Abbey. She is warm and compassionate – a lover of music who doesn't think twice about speaking her mind. Nearing the end of her novitiate, she is sent to serve as governess to the seven children of Captain von Trapp. Hoping to find her true calling in this new role, Maria faces a crisis when, unexpectedly, she falls in love with the Captain.

  • THE MOTHER ABBESS: The leader and superior of Nonnberg Abbey, Mother Abbess sees the novices through the process of becoming a nun, guiding and inspiring them as they weigh their decision. Firm and authoritative, but also warm and compassionate, Mother Abbess sends Maria to the von Trapp house, sensing that she would be a good fit in the role of governess. When Maria confesses that she has fallen in love with the Captain, the Mother Abbess assures her that love, marriage and motherhood can also be God’s will.

  • SISTER BERTHE : Mistress of Novices: A follower of strict tradition and not a fan of nonsense.

  • SISTER MARGARETTA: Mistress of Postulants: An empathetic nun who sees something good in Maria.

  • SISTER SOPHIA: Another sister who isn't sure what to do with Maria.

  • CAPTAIN GEORG VON TRAPP: A distinguished, retired Naval Lieutenant Commander whose stern, regimented disposition represses a deep sadness from the loss of his wife. Often away on business or spending time with Baroness Schraeder abroad, the Captain remains uncompromisingly loyal to his Austrian homeland as threats of Anschluss grow more serious. When Maria restores music to his household, the Captain reconnects with his children and falls unexpectedly in love with the governess.

  • FRANZ : The butler. A middle-aged man who was once the Captain's orderly in the Imperial Navy, Franz is nervous about the rising political tension in Austria but knows he won’t be able to fight it.

  • FRAU SCHMIDT: The housekeeper: The housekeeper. Efficient and professional, she may appear stern, but she cares deeply for the Captain and wishes only for the family’s happiness.

  • LIESL VON TRAPP: (Plays age 16 going on 17) Liesl is at that awkward age between childhood and adulthood and assumes a maternal role with her younger siblings. She is, however, still naïve and in need of her own guidance. She is secretly seeing Rolf, a young delivery boy who is on the verge of being swept up in the approaching Anschluss.

  • FRIEDRICH VON TRAPP: (Plays age 14) Friedrich is the oldest boy in the family and remembers what the von Trapp house was like before his mother passed away. He is learning to be a confident man, but with his father often traveling, he lacks someone to show him how.

  • LOUISA VON TRAPP: (Plays age 13) Missing her mother very much, Louisa has become quite skilled at playing tricks on the governesses, hiding toads in their pockets or giving the wrong name during introductions. But with Maria, it seems she's met her match.

  • KURT VON TRAPP: (Plays age 10, but almost 11) The youngest boy, Kurt, is sensitive and pretends not to be hurt by his father's absence. Though he misses his mother, Kurt greatly appreciates Maria from the start.

  • BRIGITTA VON TRAPP: (Plays age 9) Keenly observant for her age. She is thoughtful and, as she says, “cannot tell a lie.”

  • MARTA VON TRAPP: (Plays age 7) Very honest and forthright. Marta likes to enjoy herself and would like a pink parasol for her birthday.

  • GRETL VON TRAPP: The youngest of the Trapp children, Gretl is soft-spoken and shy, but sweet.

  • ROLF GRUBER: (Plays age 17 going on 18) Rolf is a delivery boy who is interested in Liesl. As an impressionable teen, he is aware of the growing political tension and is caught between his affection for Liesl and a need to prove his manhood.

  • ELSA SCHRAEDER: A beautiful, cosmopolitan woman in her late thirties, she has her eyes set firmly on the Captain. She is a businesswoman, president of her late husband’s corporation, who feels the way to deal with the oncoming political situation is not to fight it and let it pass. When she and the Captain realize they don’t see the future the same way, she knows the relationship is over.

  • MAX DETWEILER: A charming impresario and friend of the Captain’s. In his job as Third Secretary of Education and Culture, Max is looking for performers for the music festival. When he hears the family singing together, he knows they would be perfect. The Captain protests, but with the Anschluss approaching, he has no choice. Max realizes he can’t fight the new regime and agrees to go along with whatever is asked.

  • HERR ZELLER: Appointed Nazi official who is to prepare Austria for the Anschluss.

  • BARON ELBERFELD: Neighbor and friend of Captain von Trapp. He is of the oldest family in the valley.

  • BARONESS ELBERFELD: Baron Elberfeld’s wife.

  • ADMIRAL VON SCHREIBER: A German admiral who is now working with the Nazi party to recruit Baron von Trapp.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN for Irving Berlin's WHITE CHRISTMAS

  • BOB WALLACE: (late 20's-mid 30's) Crooner, superb singer, moves very well. Baritone. - A major singing star, Bob is the guiding force behind the song and dance team of Wallace and Davis. He wears his fame easily and is a born leader but has some trouble with social and romantic interactions. Despite his occasional gruffness, he is a deeply kind and principled man who is searching for his true love.

  • PHIL DAVIS: (20's-30's) Song & Dance Man, strong comedian, strong jazz, tap, & partnering skills required. Bari-Tenor. - The fun-loving, go-getting song-and-dance partner of the team of Wallace and Davis. An irrepressible clown, operator and incorrigible ladies' man who is determined to see his friend happy, even if it requires scheming and outright deception. He has a boyish charm and sex appeal.

  • BETTY HAYNES: (mid 20's-mid 30's) Mezzo-soprano with a rich chest mix, Must move well. - The sensible, responsible half of the upcoming song-and-dance team, The Haynes Sisters. Destined to be a star in her own right, she is nonetheless hesitant to take the spotlight for herself. A woman of decent, upstanding principles, she is devoted to her younger sister. Like Bob, she hides her yearning for true love under a protective shell.

  • JUDY HAYNES: (20's-30’s) A major Song & Dance Performer, Mezzo-alto, Strong jazz, tap, and partnering skills required - The younger, more ambitious, slightly scheming Haynes sister. While wholesome and adorable, she is sexy and flirty—a winning charmer whom no man can resist.

  • GENERAL HENRY WAVERLY: (late 50's-mid 60's) non-singing role - Retired U.S. Army General, adjusting to returning to civilian life in post World War II America. Once a powerful leader, he now struggles to run an inn in Vermont. He remains a man of great principle and dignity. Beneath his curmudgeonly military exterior lies a warm, compassionate man in need of family and love.

  • MARTHA WATSON: (late 40's-mid 60's) Character-comedienne with a full, clarion belt - Once a Broadway star, now the general's housekeeper at the Inn, Martha has a very dry, wry, wisecracking sense of humor. Bighearted but completely unsentimental, she runs the General's life in spite of his protestations. She is an irrepressible meddler, but always for what she believes to be the other guy's best interests.

  • SUSAN WAVERLY: (plays 9 years old) excellent belt voice, able to move well - The General's granddaughter, Susan is a lovable and outgoing real kid. She is very smart, wise beyond her years, and cares deeply about her grandfather. Once bitten hard by the showbiz bug, she demonstrates everything that is winning in the ultimate child performer.

  • RALPH SHELDRAKE: (mid-late 30's) Baritone - Army buddy of Bob and Phil's, now a major television executive with the Ed Sullivan Show. Fast-talking, New York professional.

  • RITA & RHODA: (mid 20's-early 30's) Strong Jazz & Tap Dancers, comedic actors - Bob & Phil's two star chorus girls, they are brash, sexy, and fun, although perhaps not the smartest.

  • EZEKIEL FOSTER: (mid 40's-late 50's) Baritone (will understudy Gen. Waverly) - The ultimate taciturn New Englander, who helps out at the inn and takes life at a very slow pace.

  • MIKE: (mid 20's-40’s) - Bob and Phil's stage manager. Has a tendency to be over-dramatic and completely hysterical but will get things done. Never seen without his whistle and clipboard, which he uses to attempt to keep order.

  • TESSIE: (30’s-60’s) Belter (will understudy Martha) - Bob and Phil's extremely competent assistant.

  • ENSEMBLE: Ensemble of strong musical comedy performers. Must be strong in ballroom, jazz and tap dance and sing well. Will play smaller ensemble roles throughout. May cover principal roles.
