Next to Normal explores a suburban family's strugge with the effects of mental illness. With book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt, the original production, starring Tony winner Alice Ripley, won three 2009 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Score and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize. Next to Normal was also chosen as "one of the year's ten best shows" by critics around the country, including The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone and The New York Times. A London revival currently plays at the Wyndham’s Theatre.

Husband and wife duo Adrianne Hick and Andrew Foote return to the Riverside stage for this moving presentation. Adrianne is known at Riverside for her impactful roles as Alice Murphy in Bright Star, Mother in Ragtime, and Francesca Johnson in The Bridges of Madison County. Andrew made his Riverside debut in 2023 as Robert Kincaide in The Bridges of Madison County.

As this emotional powerhouse musical delves into the complexities of mental illness, it depicts the impact on individuals and their families with raw honesty and emotional depth, while dealing with such issues as grieving a loss and ethics in modern psychiatry. Dad's an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens, appearing to be a typical American family. And yet, their lives are anything but normal because the mother has been battling bipolar disorder for 16 years. Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting the family's story with love, sympathy and heart.

As a non-profit theatre, Riverside chose to present this musical to connect deeply with our community. Theatre presents a way for people to identify with character experiences, fostering empathy and understanding. The hope is this production will help prompt discussions to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Additionally, the portrayal of therapy, medication, and the struggle for stability provides insights and encourages viewers to reflect on their own mental health and seek support if needed.
