Auditions at Riverside
Riverside Center for the Performing Arts is a professional regional theatre, where all roles are paid, and housing may be available. Audition for a chance to perform in Stafford County, Virginia with actors from New York, DC, Richmond, other major cities, and the local Virginia area. AEA Guest Contracts may be available, depending on the show.

A FEW GOOD MEN - AUDITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Riverside Center for the Performing Arts is accepting virtual submissions for the upcoming production of Aaron Sorkin’s A Few Good Men.
Seeking professional, non-union actors (aged 18+).
All ethnicities and gender identities considered and strongly encouraged to audition. Some roles open to any gender.

Audition Details - Virtual Audition
Please prepare and film sides provided below for the character you feel fits you best (See Director’s Note).
Once filmed, upload your audition video to a video hosting site (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.) and submit the link using the Jotform HERE

Director's Note
Please choose a side(s) for the role(s) that you are interested in.
If you are interested in a role other than KAFEE, JO, SAM, JESSUP, or ROSS please select one of the 2 other sides based on your age range. 35 and younger-please read HOWARD. 35 and older, please read WHITAKER. And of course- you are welcome to record as many sides as you like!
Please start your recording with a short “slate” introducing yourself. Nothing too specific here, just introduce yourself and let us know anything important that you feel we should know about you (where you live, do you have any issues commuting to Fredericksburg for the run, do you happen to have any military background etc). This is just for us to get to see YOU before we see your take on the character/materials.
For the scene: Please make sure to record yourself in three-quarter framing — the camera should capture from just above your head to roughly your mid-thigh. (There is no need to book studio space or get fancy with backgrounds/costumes/lighting etc- We are not worried about seeing your living rooms in the background!)
Please just ensure that you are recording with enough front light that we can clearly see your face and body and that you (and your off camera scene partner) are able to be heard clearly.
A quick note regarding this material: Among the many incredible things about this piece is that even though it was the very first play ever written by Aaron Sorkin, it is manifest even on the first page of that he had already mastered his own unique style. As such, this piece lives within the “Sorkin” world and should you not be familiar with the rhythms and cadences of the way he writes dialogue, it might be helpful to take a look at some of his other work-The West Wing, The American President, Sportsnight, Newsroom, etc. A word of warning though as you watch those pieces and try to incorporate that style and rhythm into your audition-Don’t just simply try to sound fast. Try to think fast. There’s a profound difference and tension between those two ideas in how to approach this material, and that distinction is everything. If you approach this by simply saying to yourself: “This is Sorkin—pick up the pace!” All the audience will hear is memorized dialogue. But If you speak quickly because: your character knows exactly where his argument or thought is going, then the audience hears thought. Remember that almost every character in this play feels at some point like they are the most knowledgeable person in the room, and almost every character comes to a point where they learn in sometimes very grandiose ways that they are mistaken. That is what makes it such a fantastic play to watch.
And finally, and most importantly, we freely acknowledge that you are doing US a huge favor by taking time to put these recordings together and we thank you in advance for making this effort!
Callbacks and Final Casting
Callbacks for SPECIFIC ROLES will be held in-person on November 23rd & 24th. Time TBD.
Callback invites will be emailed out the week of November 9th. Please submit your audition ASAP in order to be considered for callbacks.
PLEASE NOTE: Not all roles or candidates will be asked to come in for a live callback in order to be cast. You may also be contacted by the creative team and asked to make adjustments or submit additional sides prior to/in place of invited callbacks.
An email will be sent out to all who submit when casting for this production has been completed.

All roles are paid.
Housing may be available for performers residing 50 miles or more from Riverside Center. Please be advised that housing is limited and availability may affect final casting decisions.
Please be aware that this is a short rehearsal process and rehearsal/performance conflicts may impact final casting decisions.
If cast, you will be required to adhere to and maintain overall grooming appearance (including facial hair) in accordance with standard military guidelines for all performances. Please see the generalized grooming standard guidelines below:
Male Identified Character Grooming Standards Hair: Hair must be neatly groomed, clean, and combed or brushed. The bulk of hair on top cannot exceed 2 inches, and extreme contrasts or asymmetrical designs/shaved patterns are prohibited. Authorized cuts include fades, tapers, flat tops, and shaved heads. Braids, twists, and cornrows are generally unauthorized in uniform. Facial Hair: Service members must remain clean-shaven daily. Permanent shaving profiles are prohibited. Mustaches are permitted if kept neatly trimmed (cannot cover the upper lip line or extend past the corners of the mouth).
Female Identified character Grooming Standards Hair Bulk & Length: Hair bulk cannot exceed 4 inches. Ponytails and braids are authorized in utility or physical training uniforms (restricted to a max width of 2 inches and hanging within 6 inches from the top of the collar), but are prohibited in formal dress uniforms. Colors & Cosmetics: Hair color must look natural. Makeup and cosmetics must be conservative; eyelash extensions are strictly prohibited, and lipstick/nail polish rules are limited to clear or natural tones depending on the specific service branch guidelines.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Lt. Daniel Kaffe Character portrayed is male, 25-40, any ethnicity. The primary defense lawyer. He is an easygoing, quick-witted, and highly intelligent attorney out of Harvard who initially prefers easy plea bargains but develops a fierce drive for justice.
Colonel Nathan R. Jessep Character portrayed is male, 48-55, ethnicity. The arrogant, intimidating Commanding Officer of the Marine base in Cuba. He operates on the belief that extreme measures are necessary to protect the nation and is deeply convinced of his own moral righteousness.
Lt. Commander Joanne Galloway Character portrayed is female, 25-40, any ethnicity. A hardworking, passionate, and determined JAG officer who fights to get assigned to the case and pushes Kaffee to uncover the deeper conspiracy.
Lt. Sam Weinberg Character portrayed is male, 30-45, any ethnicity. Kaffee’s loyal, laid-back co-counsel. He provides balance and acts as a grounding, rational family man throughout the stressful trial.
Lance Cpl. Harold W. Dawson Character portrayed is male, 19-26, any ethnicity. A stoic, serious, and deeply loyal Marine. He acts as the leader of the two defendants, enforcing discipline and protecting his fellow soldiers.
PFC Louden Downey Character portrayed is male, 18-24, any ethnicity. The younger, less confident codefendant. He is obedient and respectful, generally allowing Dawson to make decisions and speak for them both.
Cpl. Jeffrey Howard Character portrayed is male, 24-35, any ethnicity. Marine stationed at Guantanamo Bay during a murder trial that uncovers a high-level conspiracy. Howard is interrogated on the witness stand.
Lt. Jonathan Kendrick Character portrayed is male, 25-35, any ethnicity. Santiago’s platoon commander in GITMO. He is a rigid, zealous military man who preaches a strict code of conduct and secretly commands the hazing rituals.
Capt. Isaac Whitaker Character portrayed is, 35-50, any ethnicity. Smart and sensible, but not altogether strict JAG supervisor.
Capt. Jack/Jackie Ross Character can be portrayed as any Gender. 35-55, any ethnicity. The prosecutor for the case. They are an intelligent, capable Marine lawyer who faces the difficult challenge of maintaining their duty while handling their personal friendship with Kaffee.
Judge Randolph Character can be portrayed as any Gender. 45-75, any ethnicity. Smart, sensible, fair judge presiding over the murder trial.
PFC William Santiago Character portrayed is male, 18-24, latino. He is sincere and sensible, but physically weak and struggling to meet the rigorous standards of the Marine Corps, leading to his isolation and ultimate death.
Dr. Stone Character can be portrayed as any Gender., 35-65, any ethnicity. Sensible but easily swayed doctor in charge of the medical care of marines at Guantanamo.
Capt. Matthew Markinson Character portrayed is male, 40-55, any ethnicity. The stoic and logical GITMO Company Commander. He recognizes the danger of the unit’s rogue hazing and attempts to cover up the issues before the murder occurs

When preparing for an audition, focus on showcasing your strengths. It’s important to select a monologue or song that highlights your unique talents. Make sure to rehearse thoroughly so you feel confident and comfortable on the day. Remember to dress appropriately for the role you’re auditioning for, and bring any necessary materials, like sheet music or a headshot.
You can submit your application through our website. Fill out the audition form, where you’ll provide your personal details, the role you’re interested in, and upload any required files. Make sure to check for any specific instructions listed for that audition.
You’ll usually perform in front of a panel of directors and producers, who will evaluate your performance and suitability for the role. We offer video audition submissions when appropriate.
We aim to notify all audition participants within a week of the audition date. You’ll receive an email regarding your status, whether you’re cast or not. We appreciate your patience and look forward to seeing your talent!
Yes, you can audition for multiple roles if they are listed for the same production. Just ensure that you prepare something suitable for each role and mention your intentions when you arrive at the audition.
