Determined stage mother Rose has sacrificed her own career in an attempt to gain stardom for daughters June and Louise. Louise, the quiet type, remains in her sister’s shadow as Rose promotes the act “Baby June and the Newsboys” in major cities across the nation. Along the way, Rose meets theatrical agent Herbie, hires him as the act’s manager, and scrimps and schemes to make ends meet while Herbie becomes like a father to the girls. But the girls begin to grow up, the act remains mediocre, and June elopes with one of the “Newsboys.” Things go from bad to worse, Herbie’s proposal of marriage is rejected, and Rose thrusts the shy Louise into the limelight of burlesque as the elegant and ladylike showgirl Gypsy Rose Lee. Hilarious humor and Broadway-standard songs which include Everything’s Coming Up Roses, You Gotta Get a Gimmick, Let Me Entertain You, and Rose’s Turn highlight this entertaining and heartwarming show.
