Originally Produced by the W.P.A. Theater, New York City, 1987 (Kyle Renick, Artistic Director).

Our most requested dramatic work – an American comedy-drama chronicling the tribulations and friendships of six women and deriving its title from its female characters, whose personalities blend the delicateness of the magnolia with the toughness of steel. The story is based on the experiences of the family and friends of the author following the 1985 death of his sister from diabetic complications and failure of a family member’s donated kidney after the birth of her son, his namesake nephew. The 1989 film, loosely based on the play, won a number of prestigious awards, including a 1990 Golden Globe award for Julia Roberts as Best Supporting Actress. You will be mesmerized by the individual and collective talents of an incredible cast, directed by Helen Hayes award winner Sherri Edelen, one of the metropolitan Washington area’s most prominent actresses.
